Can I get nostalgic about last September for a moment?

I was so lucky that my trip to Amsterdam was during a period where confinement restraints were lessened a little. Last summer in Europe, things returned almost to normal. While in France everyone was obliged to wear masks, in Amsterdam people were free to choose. I was really looking forward to this trip and this exposition. My maternal grandfather was born in Rotterdam. It means so much to me to show my art in the country of my origins. I’m so glad that there were no confinements during the dates of my trip. The risk was there, the confinements started a few weeks later.

The show was organized by my friend Ciou. We were joined by Guillaume another artist from France.

It was very refreshing to arrive at the gallery and take my mask off.

In the streets I noticed everyone on their bikes, no masks, big smiles on their faces. It made me realize how oppressive the mask is and how it makes me anxious.

We had a special protocol for the art opening and it turned out to be great! The opening was appointment only. Serious collectors were the ones who asked for and got appointments. Two people at a time were allowed in the gallery and two artists or the gallery owners Esther and Hans. Four people maximum at a time. We had the time to speak with each person that came, which often is impossible during a normal gallery opening. Esther and also gave us pizza dinner at the end of the weekend, just between the artists. They wanted to go to a nice restaurant, but we were happy not to be exposed to a restaurant full of people. Anyway at restaurants people were separated, only those sharing the same house could eat together.

I have a ton of photos. I hope you’ll enjoy taking this trip vicariously with me to Amsterdam. (The better photos are by Guillaume with his Leica, the rest are by me, Canon).

I was fascinated by the artist’s (Frans Stamkart) technique to use an erasure to get this effect.

I loved these casts of Chinese men.

Here’s what I prepared for the exposition.

Her thaumaturgic talents are to be revered. She knows the missing ingredient in the alchemic formula. Her ferocious power protects travelers from danger. She governs invisible lines (limits which restrain and restrict) protecting the oppressed and marginalized.
